This is a 5 day unit designed for intermediate / proficient ESL students. However, it can also be used for native English speaking students being introduced to essay writing.
It is designed to teach the basics of writing a 5 paragraph essay, and breaks it down into writing paragraphs, writing thesis paragraphs, and putting paragraphs together in a complete essay. Students are given opportunities to engage in whole class, group, and individual activities that encourage reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students are also introduced to peer review and revision during the unit.
The lesson plan for each day includes content and TESOL objectives, suggested materials, detailed instructions with time suggestions, a clear rationale for each activity, cultural relevance, and assessment ideas.
The unit includes suggestions for materials, but the materials themselves are NOT included in the unit and must be prepared by the teacher.
The unit is designed for 5 days, but may be adapted to meet the needs of your class. It is formatted as a word document so that you may revise it as necessary to meet your needs.
