This is a quick and easy printable booklet template that will help your students organize facts and write informational paragraphs about some American Folktale Heroes, including Johnny Appleseed, Paul Bunyan, John Henry, and Annie Oakley! There is even a blank page for you to duplicate and use for additional people.
Here's how I use this template:
*First, I print out an original of the booklet.
*Then, I copy (front and back) enough booklets for my students. I make sure the Johnny Appleseed circle map is on back of the “Table of Contents” page and the “All About Johnny Appleseed” page is right beside the circle map page. (I do not copy the cover page front and back.)
*Then, I bind the booklets. You could use binding combs, a simple row of staples, or even hole punch and stick in a three-prong folder. The possibilities are endless.
*I then choose which American Folktale Hero we will study first. (They are in ABC order by last name in the booklet.) I usually start with Johnny Appleseed simply because there is SO much info about him out there!
*After introducing my students to that person’s biographical information, we work together to complete his/her circle map with four facts about his/her life.
*I then model transferring facts from the circle map into paragraph form. Students then write their own paragraphs on the “All About (Hero’s Name)” page. This booklet goes along beautifully with informational writing.
*The students then draw a picture of the hero in the blank frame below the paragraph writing.
*The blank page can be used for any other person you choose, or the students can write about themselves!
*After completing all the pages (including additions / author pages), we complete the Table of Contents page and number the pages throughout the booklet.
Students LOVE to look back at the booklets!
