Writing About Math (WAM) This is problem solving applying common core standards. I assign one problem a week on Wednesdays. It should take between 30-40 minutes to do if they are doing it correctly. Only one problem is assigned so that the students can give it their full attention. They are expected to think deeply and answer completely in a written paragraph that explains their thinking. They need to also use pictures/drawings and numbers to solve.
I have included pictures of two student samples. I use a math journal for note taking and examples. They glue the problem directly into their journal to complete for classwork or homework. I have included 3 problems that go along with Common Core 4th Grade-Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA.3) The problems are set up so there are multiple on a page, to save on copying..
This idea can be adapted to be used across grade levels.
