Reading and writing are two subjects many students have difficulty embracing. Paired text that focus on the same topic gives students the opportunity to become creative and critical readers and writers.
This product is Common Core aligned and focuses on reading and writing activities for grades 4 – 6. Students read a literary and informational paired set of passages and write a narrative, expository, and/or argumentative essay. Each written response requires them to cite textual evidence from the text. Each writing prompt focuses on the topics of the paired text.
The four products in this BUNDLE align with the Common Core Standards (CCS). Each product not only gives the students a chance to read a literary and informational paired text but also an opportunity to write about the topic in the text.

The 6 Traits of Writing Posters
1. Use the texts and writing prompts as a diagnostic to determine each students level of writing for a genre of writing.
2. Use the texts and writing prompts in a guided literacy station to scaffold students’ writing skills.
3. Use the texts and writing prompts as a guide for students to analyze writing prompts to determine what the task is asking them to write.
4. Use the texts and writing prompts in a writing station. Students can self-correct using the 6 Traits of Writing posters or students can use the 6 Traits of Writing Expandable Bookmarks.
Reading Literature (RL):
RL.1 Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
RL.2 Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to the characters, setting, and plot; provide an objective summary of the text.
RL.3 Analyze how particular lines of dialogue or incidents in a story or drama propel the action, reveal aspects of a character, or provoke a decision.
RL.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone.
RL.5 Compare the structure of two or more texts and analyze how the differing structure of each text contributes to its meaning and style.
RL.6 Analyze how differences in the points of view of the characters and the audience or reader (e.g., created using dramatic irony) creates such effects as suspense or humor.
Reading Information (RI):
RI.1 Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
RI.2 Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to supporting ideas; provide an objective summary of the text.
RI.3 Analyze how a text makes connections among and distinctions between individuals, ideas, or events (e.g., through comparisons, analogies, or categories)
RI.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including analogies or allusions to other texts.
RI.5 Analyze in detail the structure of a specific paragraph in a text, including the role of sentences in developing and refining a key concept.
RI.6 Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how the author acknowledges and responds to conflicting evidence or viewpoints.
W.1 Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence
W.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts and information through selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.
W.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.
W.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
