Because I am passionate about writing, and also love cooking shows, I have adapted the formats of Chopped and Top Chef into a lesson that challenges Middle School and High School students to develop their analytic writing skills.
Four times a quarter, I choose the four students who have written the best Thesis Statement for that day's writing warm-up topic to compete against each other for the title of TOP WRITER. Their statements form the basis of Round 1:The Appetizer.
Note the day's topic always relates to the literature that we are currently reading.
Three student judges - the trio who earned the highest grades on their last writing assignment - choose the three writers with the best statements to move on to Round 2:The Entree (Main Ideas). The two winners of this step move on to Round 3:The Dessert (Supporting Statements and the Concluding Statement).
See the full posting for complete directions, the ten-sentence format, the judges' rubric and a gold star.
