Looking for a Back to School exercise for Middle School and High School students that will perform double duty? My "Writing & Analysis Activity: The Me I Want You to Know" will serve as a First Day activity to help you to get to know your students' thoughts and beliefs. Then, when you are studying a story, offer it to your charges as a writing and analysis activity on a character.
In both the personal and the story lessons, students will show their own round, flat, static and dynamic- attributes, or a character's, by choosing specific details to discuss the topics on the activity sheet. For the story lesson, they will pick their answers based on the information that they gathered from their reading.
The story activity should be introduced during the latter part of the rising action or when enough information about the character and plot have been given. With this lesson, Middle School and High School students will exhibit their range of thinking skills from knowledge through evaluation.
Both of these activities allow students to show their understanding of all aspects of a person's character-theirs and fictional people- as well as their analytic and critical-thinking skills.
