Here is an activity for Middle School, and especially, High School students to consider their futures. What is their dream career? Where do they see themselves in five, ten, fifteen or twenty years?

This thinking and writing assignment allows them to ponder who they are now, where they are going, and what they need academically to help them live their dream.

Usually I used this as a beginning of the year ice breaker so the students could get to know each other and I could learn about them- as young people and as students. It is an engaging preface for the personal narratives that they are required to write for college applications or for any other post high school interviews .

Have them start by designing a poster that depicts their dream career. Next, they write a paragraph explaining the school subjects and necessary skills that they will need to master to help them to attain their goals. After these are completed, set aside time for them to present their posters to their peers in a three-minute summary.

Finally, post them around the classroom so they all have time to look into their peers' futures. They make a fascinating bulletin board and visual for parent night.

These are aligned with Common Core Standards and Bloom's Taxonomy.
