This is a fun way to culminate an assignment after Middle School and High School students have finished reading a book that they chose to explore.
Their mission is to write the author and discuss their thoughts about the book. Teachers can use this assignment to check for reading comprehension and to promote writing skills, both for content and for a business letter format.
This assignment will take three days
- one to write the letter;students can write it in class and revise it for homework
- the second day to critique each others' writing, and then they take it home to complete the final revisions.
- on the third day, they bring the letter with the stamped/addressed envelope to share in class. After they share their letters, they turn them in so the teacher can evaluate them, seal them in the envelopes and then mail them.
Students are really excited when they receive a response from the author. I staple a copy of their original letter to the bulletin board along with the response from the author. For this reason, it is important that for this activity, the students read a book by a living writer.
