A Spiral Figurative Language and Writing Exercises Program
Writing Aerobics is a writing exercise method that is meant to be completed daily as part of your writing program. It only takes 5 minutes a day, but you should see a dramatic difference in your students’ writing skills. They will become secure in their use of figurative language and use it more frequently in their daily writing. You only need to complete one exercise a day to reap the benefits of this program. Just set the timer for 1-2 minutes and let them fill in the exercise for the day. When the timer goes off, ask students to share some of their examples. Talk about the examples and share your own ideas. If you continue completing one exercise a day, you will see your students give deeper and richer figurative language examples. I don’t spend more than 5 minutes a day on the exercise. There are 150 exercises, enough to get you through the school year. If you want to have your students begging for Writing Aerobics, play the game Beat the Teacher (page 3). Good luck as you make magic in your classroom!
