To meet the increasing demands of the Common Core, we have to provide our students with critical thinking activities in all academic areas. This product, My Writing Can Sparkle Like a Big Kids, does just that by providing meaningful, higher level thinking activities. These centers and activities are aimed at the young learner, from Kinder to Second Grade.
Included in this huge product (93 p) you will find the following 7 activities for your Writing Block/Center Time:
~I Spy: Students are shown a close up photo of an item. Using given clues, they must determine what it is. Then they must write response defending their choice. A Craftivity is included in which they make their own I Spy picture with a detective, for a bulletin board.
~I Can Be an Author: Students are given a picture of a book cover. By looking at the picture, they must decide upon a title for the book and write a description of what the story might be if they were the author.
~My New Video Game: Students are given a printable with spinners to create new characters and settings a new video game. They have to illustrate their new game and describe it with their spun character and setting. A blank printable is provided for them/you to add your own spinner choices.
~My New Zoo: Students are shown center cards with real photos of zoo animals. Randomly they choose three and then must take parts of each animal and create a new zoo animal. They must draw their new animal and write a description of it.
~I Love Nonfiction: There are 6 Nonfiction books provided that students must fill in, illustrate and write about. Topics included are Winter related.
~My Winter List Book: Students are provided with 10 Winter Themed Lists to complete. These are put together into a book with cover that is included.
~Only Two: Students are given printables with only three pictures (closely related) that they must determine which one doesn't belong. They then must defend their positions in writing.
All these activities can be done independently once the students are familiar with the directions, which makes the perfect for a center. The majority of them are print and go activities. I purposefully made them activities in which the students would have to take their thinking a step further to help strengthen their writing skills in all areas. Only two of the activities are Winter Related; otherwise they can be used anytime throughout the school year. Please see the preview for a better look at the activities, centers and craftivity.
