This cute 'Alice in Wonderland' themed 'Bump it Up' wall is an excellent visual learning wall in which students set their own goals and go about achieving them.
Many teachers say go back and make your writing better, without knowing how to provide appropriate scaffolds and feedback to help students to improve their writing.
There are a variety of strategies to support students in knowing what ‘better’ looks like. A ‘Bump it Up’ wall is one way that has proved to be a useful tool for
improving writing from Kinder to Year 10. Making ‘better’ visible is the key.
In order to track and encourage growth in writing, I have created a detailed, interactive 'Bump it Up Wall' display for my classroom, using the 'I can' statements. Students are able to set personal learning goals whilst making literacy learning more visible in the classroom. Each critical aspect of the continuum is organised into clusters of behaviours that demonstrate the progression of writing. The development of writing skills is shown as students progress from one cluster to the next. I have printed small photos of my students faces to blue tac next to the corresponding level of their achievement (you could also use pegs etc). They get so excited when they reach their next goal and move their little face up the clusters.
