Writing Center: Do you have students who need to learn how to write correct sentences? These task cards can help if you place them in a writing center.
Each card contains a high frequency word (sight word), an example of sentence with that sight word,a reminder to use a capital letter, space between words, punctuation mark, and to sound out the words .The student's task is to look at the sample sentence and write his/her own sentence with that sight word.I have my students copy the sample sentence first and then write their own sentence.A separate page is provided on which the student has to check if the sentence has a capital letter,if there's space between words,if there is a period at the end,and if he/she sounded out the words.
The sight words used are:
play,we,is,jump,go,find,for,here,can,see,the,and,big,away,blue,funny,help,in,little,my,red,run, you, three, come,down, it,look, make, me,not, one,said, two,to, yellow.
Differentiation is easy:some students will work on only one task card, some will work on more ;some students will change only one word from the sample sentence, some will write a completely different sentence with the sight word.
Example Card 1:
Sample sentence:I can play tag.
Low students might change only one word:I can play catch.
High students might write a completely new sentence:I like to play at the park.
***36 TASK CARDS***The cards are ideal to be printed out in color, but they print out OK in gray scale, too.You can laminate them,if you want, and you'll have them for years to come.
The product is aligned with the following Common Core standards for kindergarten and 1st grade:
