Learning should be fun! This writing center really motivates students to write a quality description piece. Included in each center activity (front and back) is a drawing game, a description web plan and room for writing.
Students are pitted against each other in a fun game. The object is to complete the drawing of some specified animal or person before your partner does. They roll dice to determine which part to draw next. If one student rolls the same number as in a previous roll, they forfeit their turn. The game moves forward until the drawing is finished. After the game is complete, they construct a plan based on the details of their writing. Finally, students convert that plan into a quality description.
I would recommend stretching the activity and writing over two days of center time. Students love their creations and tend to show more ownership of the product because they are describing something of their own making.
