I am always looking for simple activities that my students can work on independently during guided reading time.
I have found that the Write to Self is the most difficult for beginning writers to work on independently.
These little books give the children a prompt for each page.
Sight words are printed in light gray, allowing the children to trace over the words and there is plenty of room for the children to illustrate their words.
A mini word wall is provided for each book.
Once children understand the procedure, they are focused and productive!
Most importantly they have created a book that they can read and claim as their own.
