Writing + Figurative Language = Here’s the Scoop! Here’s the Scoop can be used as part of a center, as an anchor activity, as a whole group activity, or during small groups. Students do not have to complete all the activities. Teachers can differentiate according to students’ readiness levels and interest.
Writing Task Cards
There are 6 writing task cards with an ice cream theme. The writing tasks are intended to be short writing pieces that can easily be further developed by students if time permits. Students can work independently or with a cowriter. The following types of writing are included:
sense poem: imagery and descriptive words
argumentative writing: convince customers
feature article: describe something new in town
comparison: identify similarities
mystery: beginning, middle, and end
question writing: What’s the question?
Roll-a-Cube and Booklet
Roll-a-Cube is a way to engage students in reviewing 6 language skills and applying these skills to short tasks using the theme of ice cream. Review target words found on the Roll-a-Cube using the Here’s the Scoop Anchor Mat included in this download. Copy and assemble the Roll-a-Cube and have an activity you can use in a writing center, during group work, or as a quick review during transitions. The tasks can be completed in the ice cream booklet that is provided in the download or in a writing journal. The target words found on the cube include:
dialogue with quotes
Have 5 minutes during the day use Roll-a-Cube and have students generate ideas orally to review key skills!
