Writing Checklist for Beginning Writers reminds your students to check for these 10 important writing principles before handing in their writing. Young writers also learn that rereading, revising and editing are part of the writing process. This checklist can be included in a writing folder for distance learning and school-at-home.

Beginning writer checklist:

1. quiet worker

2. reread writing

3. begin sentences with a capital letter.

4 sound out words

5. spell sight words correctly and use word wall

6. check for spaces between words

7. use punctuation at end of sentence

8. add details

9. words match illustrations.

10. write 8 sentences or more.

10. best writing, reread and checked.

There are 2 choices for #10. Personally, I do not like quantifying the writing but sometimes some students need a directive to write more.

This checklist is perfect to keep in a writing folder and an efficient way to remind your students of these important writing principles. You might also laminate the checklist so students can check off the boxes with an expo marker and reuse this checklist. Another way is to have students visually check each writing principle and simply place a unifix cube or counter in the check box. [saves paper]

Also Included:

1. pocket chart keepers of these same writing principles that you may wish to display in your writing center.

2. little ‘spaceman’ checkers - for checking for spaces between words and adds smiles to your writing time.
