Product Description
I went to a workshop about how to help students become stronger writers. Our instructors showed us how to check student work using the standards. We took the Common Core standards and broke them down into smaller pieces. Then we evaluated papers with these standards in front of us. We took one standard at a time, annotating the paper with our thoughts and observations. We did not “edit” the paper and mark all over it with red ink. Instead, we focused on one standard at a time and noted what we saw in the paper, not what was wrong with it. This is simple, yet huge!

This is beneficial to students and teachers. First, it helps teachers focus on one standard at a time, rather than looking at everything all at once. It also helps us see what the student is strong in and what they can improve on. Next, it helps students because it tells them exactly what you are looking for. Writing is a so subjective because there is no “one, right answer.” This approach eliminates student stress and confusion because they know where to start writing and how to begin correcting their writing.

We discussed the importance of vertical alignment. We need to know what students should know before they get to us, as well as what they should know in future grades. It’s just as important for students to know this information. So, I created these documents based on these new ideas. There are three standards in this document, with all grades included, K-5. I included the first three standards - opinion writing, informative/explanatory writing, and narrative writing.

I am going to print these on cardstock, laminate, and put into students’ binders. I will begin by explaining the layout and purpose of these documents. Then I will explain all standards for all grades (this may vary depending on the grade you teach). When we write, I will ask students to refer to these documents and we will focus on the one that reflects our mode of writing. Students can refer to this before, during, and/or after their draft. If these are laminated, students can write on these with vis-à-vis markers, if you choose.

I’m excited about using these tools to help my students become better writers, as well as to help me become a stronger, more standards-based teacher. I hope they are useful to use as well.
