This upper elementary writing checklist is meant to be used as a rubric/guide for everyday writing in your classroom. I like to set expectations for any type of writing that is turned in (whether it be math, reading, or other subjects) and these will be the guidelines I expect my students to follow. I intend to use this as a "growing" checklist, meaning that I will start the year with only one or two items and I will continue to add more as the year progresses. Students will know not to turn anything in until they have reviewed their writing and the checklist.
Two different versions are included (a white or black background option).
The following items are included on the checklist:
-All sentences start with a capital letter and end with correct punctuation.
-I is ALWAYS capitalized.
-My paragraphs are indented.
-All proper nouns are capitalized.
-My writing starts with a thorough introduction.
-My conclusion wraps up my thoughts.
-Sentence length and structure vary throughout my writing.
-I use the correct homophones.
-I DO NOT use texting language.
*An editable slide is also included so that you can add additional items to your check list if you wish.
Two different worksheet versions are also included so that students can keep a copy in their binders. (These are editable as well.)
Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks so much !
