One of the chief struggles I found as an English/Language Arts teacher for two decades was in the instruction of writing. The process of putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard was hard enough for most students that the thought of self-revision seemed an impossibility. Among the most problematic of those elusive revision tasks was that of expanding the content of an original argument.
So, in a quest to help students help themselves make their writing “fat,” I developed a method of using guiding questions to help them expand those chunks and add sophistication to their arguments.
The 37 Chunk Questions included in this download help students take their original and very fixed claims and elaborate on them by evaluating statements from multiple angles.
Students can shuffle the cards and draw a few ideas to help them overcome writer’s block and learn to revise with the best of them.
These full color printables print well from card to full paper size; additionally, you may purchase a full color, laminated card or poster size set should you need them printed for you!
Have fun with teaching students to chunk; the possibilities are numerous--anchor stations, revision rotations, writer’s workshop, guided practice, formative assessment, and everything in-between.
