Using a simple coloring book can generate ideas for writing and also for identifying the parts of a story. Laminate the directions and place them at a center. Get a coloring book from any dollar store. This may look simple but I have used it with secondary students and gotten terrific test results! It works! This mini-lesson really makes a difference in student's thinking and test scores. For the lower grades this is meant to be done orally to help oral language development.
