Learning Goals are great for students to help them guide what they need to learn. It makes next steps visible for learners of all ages and reassures them that they are learning!
Updated July 11, 2018: Second writing continuum added with more explicit wording as shown in this blog post.
I personally like to photocopy a current example for each year for each part of the writing continuum. I mount them on different colors to help students identify which “color” they believe that they can write. Students love to see how they move through the various colors throughout the year!
I laminate the continuum together so that it can be posted in a straight line and it adds durability as it gets used frequently. I often bring this continuum out during parent-teacher interviews to show parents the continuum and show how their child has grown throughout the school year. It is very helpful and reassuring to parents to see this growth.
All children progress through the continuum at a different rate and a different order. This is normal!
