7 Cooperative Learning Writing Workshops

This is 7 writing workshops that use cooperative learning strategies such as group and pair work, role-play, brainstorming, mingling, peer editing and many others to teach writing. It includes,

1) Letter of Invitation

Invite Someone Famous to your Hometown

This is a fun 9 page letter writing activity that has been downloaded over 1700 times by TPT users. Students write a letter of invitation inviting a famous person to their hometown. It incorporates map making and directions and helps you track student interest. It includes an invitation letter graphic organizer and peer editing graphic organizer.

2) Letter of Advice-Dear Abby- Love Problems

My high school students tell me that this is their favorite activity of the year. This 18 page activity packet presents different problems related to love. There is a surprised girlfriend who finds out that her boyfriend is already engaged, a conservative girl under pressure to have a physical relationship with her boyfriend, someone who is in love with their best friend's boyfriend, and many more. There are letters for teenagers as well as an adult audience.
Students use guide questions and a "Mingle and Write," cooperative learning strategy while reading the letters and discussing each problem. After this they learn how to write a letter giving advice to the forlorn lover. It also includes an advice letter graphic organizer.

3) The Last Narrative Lesson You Will Ever Need

Horrors in Homeroom 1

This might not be the last one you need, but it works for me. This is an all-in-one narrative bundle which will teach your class how to write a narrative essay. It has been developed and refined over a 15 year period and should be all you need in to teach a narrative unit. This 12 page lesson packet includes;

a) "Who Put the Gun in the Desk?" Horrors in Homeroom Chapter1 and a writing a narrative lesson plan

b) Story Outline Graphic Organizer
c) Tips for Adding Suspense and Intrigue to a Story Worksheet and Graphic organizer

4) A writing workshop for using more powerful words in an essay.

5) A Five Paragraph Essay Role-play

3 Things that Symbolize me

This is a 13 page activity plus power point which I have been using for years as my first lesson to introduce a five paragraph essay. It uses role-play and group work to help students develop their narratives.
It is easier to write when we know the topic well and when it is interesting to us. What is more interesting or familiar to kids than writing about themselves and their hobbies and interests? Also, what is cooler or more entertaining than using a role-play to visually teach the five paragraph writing model?

In this lesson students think of three things that symbolize them and bring them to school. The teacher does the same and models the stages of a 5 paragraph essay by using their own items. It is fun and effective and teaches or reinforces a very important concept.

6) Five Easy Steps for Writing Essay Questions using The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton

7) Cooperative Learning Activity
Introduction to Writing and Debates
This is a worksheet that I use as a pre-activity to debating and writing 5 paragraph and expository essays. It takes about two days and my students love it.
Students participate in cooperative learning groups and are asked to complete a controversial issue worksheet. After this, groups choose one issue and participate in a cooperative learning activity where the whole class shares ideas. Then each group must either present or debate another groups about their issue.

8) Graphic Organizers for Writing, Speech and Debate
This is a packet of 6 graphic organizers that I have used throughout the years at the high school and college level. They will help your students to organize and focus their writing and speaking activities. I think you will find them useful and fun. This packet includes the three graphic organizers already listed as well as graphic organizers for debate, speech and presentation, and a speech and presentation outline with sample language.

You and your kids will love this bundle of cooperative learning writing lessons.
