This seven page resource for writing lesson plans begins with an introduction to the Conceptual Development Model that involves three stages of learning: 1) concrete or manipulative, 2) pictorial and 3) the abstract. The concrete stage involves using hands-on teaching which might involve the use of math manipulatives or real items. Next, the pictorial stage utilizes pictures to represent the real objects or manipulatives. Last, the abstract stage of development entails reading the textbook, using numbers to compute, solving formulas, etc.

This resource illustrates the Conceptual Development Model in an easy-to-read design which is suitable for copying in a poster format. After that, several specific examples of how to use this model when planning and teaching mathematics are listed by grade level (grades 1-5). Each example lists an idea for the concrete state, the pictorial stage and the abstract stage of learning. A blank table is included to assist you in planning.
