This is an intriguing engaging classroom experience that inspires students to write--one of the best writing activities that I have ever developed. Years later, I still have former students who remember this activity with enthusiasm because of their emotional, physical and mental involvement in such an unique activity. Of course a candle flame is active and universally mesmerizing and has a welcome calming effect.
Basically the students are guided through an activity in which they stare calmly at a candle flame for a couple of minutes, then close their eyes and observe the image of the flame. They learn to become keen observers of movement, colors, shape and texture of the flame in preparation for writing about it.
The 3 handouts include a detailed paragraphy-by-paragraph instruction sheet, teacher guidelines for instruction and a student writing & proofreading checklist.
