This Writing Expressions Quiz
aligns perfectly to Common Core State Standard 5.NF.5. This standard introduces students to the language of Algebra. Being able to translate a numeric expression into words or a real-life situation into an algebraic expression is an extremely important concept for all of middle school and high school math.
The product includes two versions so that students who don't master the skill the first time get an opportunity to re-take it. Each quiz has 10 multiple choice questions.
1) Morgan bought 3 pairs of socks for $7 each and a headband for $8. Which expression could be used to figure out Morgan’s total cost?
a) 3 + 7 + 8
b) (3 + 7) x 8
c) (3 x 7) + 8
d) (3 x 7) x 8
2) Which represents the expression below?
7 x (345 + 962)
a) 7 more than the sum of 345 and 962
b) 7 times the sum of 345 and 962
c) 7 less than the sum of 345 and 962
d) the product of 7 and 345 increased by 962
This quiz is designed for 5th grade but could be a challenge activity for 4th grade or used to spiral review for 6th or 7th grades.
