Writing-Five Paragraph Essay Cooperative Learning Role-Play
This is a 13 page Lesson and Activity plan plus power point which I have been using for years as my first lesson to introduce a five paragraph essay. It uses cooperative learning strategies such as role-play, brainstorming, group work, and peer editing to teach the five paragraph essay.
It is easier to write when we know the topic well and when it is interesting to us. What is more interesting or familiar to kids than writing about themselves and their interests? Also, what is cooler or more entertaining than using a role-play to visually teach a writing model?
In this lesson students think of three things that symbolize them and bring them to school. The teacher does the same and models the stages of a 5 paragraph essay by using their own items.
It is fun and effective and teaches or reinforces a very important concept. The original idea is not mine, but I think you will like the way it has been adapted here. I have included two versions of the same activity to match different levels and learning styles. This package includes:
1) Two different workshops for teaching the lesson with lesson and activity plans.
A) Journal writing preactivity-Something
that Symbolizes me (A good paragraph)
B) A visual model and role-play of the 5-
c) A related power point presentation
on both lessons
D) Group Writing and Peer Editing
E) A Sample essay
F) A Five Paragraph Essay Outline
G) A Peer Editing Worksheet
