Spend a week studying Edgar Allan Poe! This set of 40 Writing Prompt Task Cards contains first lines of popular short stories and novels. Students love writing timed group stories and reading them during Author’s Chair. Teachers need a timer to start and stop the writing fun.

Teachers have a variety of options for how to use the writing task cards in their classrooms. Students create their own short stories in classroom groups, or individually, and will study the elements that go into the plot of a short story. They will create an outline of the plot of their own stories using a diagram in the powerpoint slide.

Students will study the first lines and decide what about the writing pulls the writer in. Point of view, description, setting, images, dialogue and voice are all important elements that draw readers in or make them put the book back on the shelf.

Students may use a provided recording sheet to keep track of which task cards they have used and outline what writing skill they improved while doing creative or narrative writing with the task card prompts.

This is a great way to practice timed writing fluency with students in preparation for state assessment test writing. Teachers may also use the cards in a writing center where students may work individually on cards of choice throughout the year. Fun Friday Centers have been a popular activity for my sophomores.

I recommend the 40 task cards for high school students although higher level readers in middle school might enjoy the examples.

There are two exit passes. One invites students to assess what they have learned about writing or how they have improved their own writing skills whlie working on the task cards. A second exit pass evaluates the class lesson and the student engagement for the class period. Teachers may opt to use either or none.

A variety of novels and short stories are used in the examples including Poe’s work, classroom literature novel choices, and Young Adult novels that students may have read during recreational reading. The forty cards could be grouped by genre.
