Interactive notebooks, lapbook or file folder activities is another method to teaching concepts at any age or grade level. These folders can be used as part of your language arts class or as part of your Daily 5 activities.
When students construct these 3D organizers, students are learning key concepts and making connections in other ways than just gluing a sheet into their notebooks or making notes. Students interact with their learning as they create the folder and review the finished product.
Interactive file folder serves many purposes:
• teach or review new concepts
• information is located in one place so students can easily review their work for tests or to reference throughout the school year
• provide a hands-on approach to learning for multiple learning styles particularly for visual learners
• Creating these folders is fun- who doesn’t like to cut and glue
Many sets sold online contain just too much information. The folders are overflowing and concepts are layered on top of one another. This is overwhelming for many students. I have developed 3 separate sets for grades 1-3, 2-4 and 3-6. They do overlap so depending on where your students are, you may use 1 or 2 of the sets during the school year.
This particular folder contains the following concepts:
Parts of speech (SALT)
Show not tell
Stretch a Sentence
Homonyms, synonyms & antonyms
CUPS (mechanics -edit)
ARMS ( word choice – revise)
Words to use instead
Narrative writing check list
Don’t go searching, they are all in one place and ready to be used
The instructions for these folders can easily be adapted and used in either a lapbook, interactive notebook or folder.
Some teachers like to teach or review one concept at a time so this could be a multi-day project. Others would prefer to assemble the folders and then teach or review the concepts. Either way, students will be cutting out the material to be attached to the folder.
