Welcome to the land of Scripton! Scripton is governed by the Honorable King Scriptus and Queen Scribiva. Their monarchy is one of great wealth where nobles and peasants work together in happiness. The local sorceress lives on the edge of the kingdom, providing security to the people of Scripton. The daily life on Scripton is quite magical.
Until something unforeseen transpires... the Queen has been kidnapped!
Queen’s Ransom is an expository/informational and argumentative writing unit developed as a game. Throughout the game, students work on writing challenges that include: sentence and paragraph construction, idea organization, introductions and conclusions, supporting claims with evidence, and considering counterarguments. A culminating argumentative assessment prompt is included at the conclusion of the game.
The game’s objective requires students to complete challenges to earn “coins” that will help them free the queen at the end of the game. Instructional connections and tips for classroom implementation are provided through a teacher's guide. Connections include suggestions on finding "flipped" video lessons online and using a networking tool (like Edmodo) for effectively implementing the gamification unit.
