Help your students keep track of their writing goals with this clip chart. I laminated each card and used binder rings to attach them so that I could change them out as the year moved along. This chart includes goals related to the writing process, various writing structures and genres, word usage, grammar, spelling, and mechanics. Each card is related to one or more 3rd grade TEKS (featured in the bottom right corner of each card), but can be easily correlated to Common Core or used for a different grade level. These cards can be used interchangeably throughout the year based on what type of writing your class is doing. For example, some of the cards are specific to persuasive writing and some are specific to narrative writing. However, the majority can be used all year round.

My goal for my classroom was to create a resource that could be used all year long to help my students strive and celebrate their accomplishments in writing. My vision for this product is that the students will choose a goal to make a priority after an individual conference with their teacher about a particular writing piece. The students simply place their clip on the goal they will be striving for.

Once the student has had time to work on improving that skill to obtain that goal, they can fill out a request form that would call on the teacher to evaluate their writing. This form forces them to take ownership over their learning and the steps they took to obtain the goal. They will staple to form to the piece that they want evaluated, and they can remove their clip if they obtained their goal.

A great way to encourage them to always be improving their writing would be to conference with them about that piece, praise them for their progress, and choose a new goal.
