As suggested by Lucy Calkins, it is sometimes beneficial to hold 'boot camps' on certain topics with which students need more practice. For those of you who use the writing workshop format, this boot camp steps outside of the writing workshop format for direct instruction on grammar skills to be applied when returning to the workshop model. This boot camp could last anywhere from about 3 to 7 days, depending on how much time you choose to spend on each topic and the practice activities that you choose to employ.
The document is set in a 'boot camp' theme with a body warm-up spinner, practice drills, and extra practice drills. This is a SMART Notebook document, with pages/activities meant to be printed for students.
The topics included in this boot camp are:
-Parts of Speech
-Common and Proper Nouns
There are instructional slides that teach each topic with practice slides that follow. These slides can be printed for your students to follow along with your lesson and answer the practice problems right on the printouts.
Additionally, there are printable activities included at the end of the Notebook document, entitled "Practice Drills." These are partner activities/games that could be used to help students practice the concepts. [These should be printed on a whole page due to the size need for materials that need to be cut out]
Also included at the end of the Notebook document are "Extra Practice Drills." These can be used for practice in class or for homework.
