Writing Insight: A Deeper Look at Ethan Frome
This is a 30-50 minute activity that asks students to think critically and write insightful statements about symbols and motifs in the novel. Students will first brainstorm lists of symbols and motifs from the novel and "show" words (active verbs that convey meaning). Next, students will use these examples to form interesting and insightful statements about the meaning and consequences of events in the novel. This is a great way to reinforce writing critically at a higher level. It has been used successfully in college prep and AP classes, pushing students to improve their own writing as they make discoveries about character behavior and the author's writing devices.
A list of 51 "show" words is included.
