Pre-writing is an essential step in the writing process and free writing encourages students to let their ideas flow freely from mind to paper. I use journaling as a form of pre-writing/free writing for all of my formal writing assignments and have found that with practice, students' attitudes towards the writing process greatly improve. This power Point walks students through the free writing process and rules of journal writing.
The following items are included in this download:
1) Power Point- 14 slides introducing the free writing concept (inspired by Lynn Nelson's books)
2) Power Point Student Handout- a black and white copy of the original introductory Power Point but with blanks riddled throughout; print the slides three to a page and students can fill in the blanks and take additional notes. Excellent for differentiated instruction and students with special needs.
3) Printable Sample Journal Entry that has followed the rules of journal writing. Students love seeing this side of their teachers so feel free to quickly write your own journal entry to share with your students...the messier the better, or use the sample provided.
