For the past 6 years, I've worked as a scorer of state writing assessments. I've seen a wide range of writing ability, but it's all too common for students to not pass. This experience has inspired me to create this practice journal.
This writing journal includes 12 prompts for each of the 5 modes of writing: narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive, and creative, for a grand total of 60 writing prompts.
This file comes with a generic "My Writing Journal" cover, as well as a "Summer Writing Journal" cover, so you can use it any time of the year.
I've also included a list of all 60 prompts organized by mode (they are all mixed up in the journal so that the student is never writing in the same mode twice in a row. Trying to keep them on their toes!).
I figure there's enough prompts for 1-2 uses a week during the school year. It would also be excellent as summer maintenance homework: 1 prompt a day for two months.
This journal would be great with a comb binding. I've also included a page of only lines at the end, which can be used to create double-sided pages so that older students have more room to write.
If you like this journal, please leave a good rating! Thanks! :)
