Writing Leads PowerPoint: This small bundle contains a PowerPoint that can be used in a writing lesson when you are teaching students how to write leads that will hook your reader. This resource contains a 37-slide PowerPoint, an interactive notebook page, and bookmarks that can be given to students to serve as a reference.

The following ten lead styles are presented:

1. Question

2. Dialogue

3. Onomatopoeia

4. Action (Vivid Verbs)

5. Strong Feelings and Emotions

6. Internal Dialogue

7. Simile or Metaphor

8. Description of a setting or character

9. Flashback

10. Interesting Fact

At the beginning of the PowerPoint, a student writer asks for help revising her "One day..." lead. After each lead style is introduced, a lead of that type is shown that the writer could use. Therefore, students see all of the different options they have when writing a lead for one particular story.

The last ten slides of the PowerPoint show leads from well-known chapter books. Students identify which type(s) of leads each author used in each book.

Finally, a short explanation page for teachers is included with the interactive notebook entry.

This file also includes a 5-page PowerPoint companion handout, if you wish to use it! Students will remain especially engaged when they write on their own handout as you advance through the PowerPoint. When complete, they have a valuable tool for future reference! The companion handout is available in both printable format or digital format.
