This is can be a culminating activity or a summative assessment for Truman Capote's In Cold Blood, a nonfiction novel frequently taught in AP Language and Composition. The activity encourages students to examine the language techniques Capote uses and to create narrative pieces that utilize those techniques.
For homework, I assign the following to students:
Then during the next class session, I introduce students to their project, which I give them 3 days to work on during class. The activity involves them writing from the third person limited point of view tracing the events leading up to, or following the crime, attempting to get readers to sympathize with the individuals involved in the crime. The activity is then followed by a metacognitive reflection writing activity.
