Product Description
The key to a successful Writing Workshop at the middle school level is allowing students enough time for their independent writing. Allowing students time for independent writing allows teachers time for individual writing conferences and guided writing groups. Teaching broad concepts about writing or giving everyone the same writing project or prompt would never allow this to happen. Break away from the traditional model and try out teaching your Writing Workshop with minilessons. All the information you need to get started and create your own writing minilessons is in this free product. This includes:

*Rationales for why Writing Minilessons are effective.
*Explanations of the different parts of a writing minilesson (Author Talk, Activating Background Knowledge/Providing a Rationale, Minilesson Statement, Modeling, Have-a-go, Application, Share, and Extension) .
*A printable template that you can use for planning your own writing minilessons with prompting questions to guide you.
*A teacher self-evaluation to help you measure the effectiveness of your writing minilesson.
*A list of types of writing minilessons, along with examples of each.
*A sample minilesson on revising writing to add meaningful dialogue to give a sample of what the writing minilesson would look like planned out.

As a middle school literacy coach certified using the Literacy Collaborative framework from Lesley University, this is my understanding of best practice for teaching writing to middle school students. It changed my middle school students as writers, and it can change yours too!
