Monthly D.E.W. (Drop Everything & Write) Writing Sheets: Classroom:
Monthly D.E.W. Writing Sheets are copied and used each month to promote writing in the classroom. You can choose to do the topic chosen for the month or do one of the extra writing sheets. Students write for a set amount of minutes, papers are collected, rubric and data are done and paper is filed until the end of the school year.
Each month our school has a D.E.W. day on a chosen topic. Our principal gets on the PA and tells everyone it is D.E.W. time. She tells the students the topics and discusses what they could write about, she may even share a poem or quote about the topic. Each grade level writes about the topic all at the same time (if they are in specials, students do it when they return to class).
Each student writes about the topic for 30 minutes. (Kindergarten may choose to do less time, especially at the beginning of the year). After 30 minutes of writing, students can illustrate their story with the box made available to them.
Writing pieces were then collected and one was chosen to highlight in the school wide showcase for the month. All student papers are looked at by our principal and then we filed the papers each month to keep until the end of the school year.
10 Additional D.E.W. Writing Sheets:
Additional D.E.W. Writing Sheets are copied and used each instead of the monthly topic chosen or for additional use in the classroom.
Grade Level D.E.W. Cover
: At the end of the school year students look at their writing pieces and see how they have progress in their writing from the beginning of the year until the end. Their writing pieces are put into a booklet with this cover to send home at the end of the school year.
Grade Level Rubric is used to assess students progress of grade level writing skills. Rubric can be shared with student and parents.
Yearly Data Sheet to Record Fluency and Rubric of Student:
Each month record how many words students would attempt to write (fluency of writing) and then use our grade level rubric to grade them on their writing piece. Data assesses how each students writing is progressing through the year and it is a good discussion topic with parents at conferences.
Kids have fun working on writing skills with these fun D.E.W. topics!
