Product Description
Need to teach your students how to write quality informational text and not sure exactly where to begin? This unit (which covers 24 of the Common Core writing standards for 4th-6th grades) will guide you from start to finish!

In this unit your students will:

* explore informational text
* review the most commonly used text structures in nonfiction
* review text features and their purposes
* generate subtopics and choose appropriate text structures
* use graphic organizers to record the information they know
* conduct research to supplement their information
* paraphrase when taking notes
* write paragraphs that include topic sentences, detail sentences, and transitional words/phrases appropriate for the text structure
* elaborate on their topic by using factual numbers, names, and examples
* elaborate on their topic by including descriptions with precise adjectives and content specific vocabulary
* elaborate on their topic by adding quotes
* write an introduction that will hook the reader and let them know what subtopics will be developed later
* write a conclusion that restates the main points and offers a final thought for the reader to consider
* use text features to make their information more clear and interesting
* give credit to their sources on a bibliography page

The best part is you will be able to model all of these things for the students, but the hard work of coming up with the writing to model has already been done for you!

This bundle includes all of the following:

* Detailed lesson plans
* a 33-page student packet
* graphic organizers for description, sequence, comparison, cause/effect, and problem/solution text structures
* completed graphic organizers for modeling
* completed nonfiction writing on cheetahs for modeling
* grading checklist
* 14 learning target posters (11 x 17)

You will need a variety of informational books for your students to explore and one copy of the Cheetahs Zoobook for your modeling.
