Writing Openers and Fluency Toolkit provides two essential resources for upper elementary, middle school, and high school teachers. The first series of resources consists of 145 interactive Sentence Revision writing openers. These ten-minute Sentence Revision lessons help your students apply the Knowledge of Language Standards found in the Common Core State Standards Language Strand (L.3). The Sentence Revision lessons focus on applying knowledge of the Conventions of Standard English (L.1, 2) and the Language Progressive Skills. Each lesson includes a description of the Lesson Focus, practice Example(s), and a My Own Sentence task or Language Application Revision to determine whether students have mastered the Lesson Focus. Students learn a focused grammatical or writing skill or concept with definitions and examples and then apply that skill or concept in the writing context, using sentence combining, sentence manipulation, and grammatical sentence models.
The second set of resources includes eight on-demand essay writing fluency assessments with accompanying reading passages. Writing fluency practice is provided with are eight on-demand essays, each aligned to the writing strand of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Four essays are informative/explanatory (Writing 2.0) and four essays are argumentative (Writing 1.0). Each writing task addresses all sub-points within the CCSS writing strands. These eight essays also serve as diagnostic assessments to inform teachers how to plan and differentiate instruction according to students’ needs. Each essay has a connected resource text and writing prompt based upon a key writing direction word. Analytical rubrics allow the teacher to formatively assess individual progress and prepare students for standardized essay tests. Each of the eight on-demand essays based upon the Common Core Writing Standards.
