Product Description
Poetry Writing! Teach students to compare and contrast for state test assessment as they write Poetry of Place. Students will write about one place they know well using tangible description and compare it to another place they do not know as much about. The comparison might be to outerspace, a fantasy kingdom, a planet, Africa, or another choice of the poet.

A powerpoint presentation includes short video examples of poems to ignite images from the past in students’ minds. One of the videos includes three different poems. The math poem is great for grades 6 through 12. The other two poems the poet performs may be more appropriate for grades 9 through 12.

Slides take students through instructions and a detailed example of comparing and contrasting. Two different examples of a poem are given with the format of the stanzas changing from one poem to the next.

A rubric for poetry and an exit pass are included. The poetry lesson could be one 90 minute class period or shorter periods of time over three days.

Teachers may opt to allow time at the end of the lesson for Author’s Chair when class members who want to share may read their poems.

Writing Poetry of Place includes:
Powerpoint presentation in jpgs
Hyperlinks for videos
Class directions for comparing and contrasting in Word docx or PDF format
Two example poems
Poetry Rubric
Exit Pass
