These writing “pokes” are task cards designed for you to use when your students are writing, whether they are working on an assignment or in the middle of workshop. (These pokes are available in a Writing Pokes Bundle)
Read about how I use the Pokes for practice and differentiation HERE
The idea behind the “pokes” is that they focus the students on one task at a time, so they can target the skill and not get overwhelmed with the revision process. The back of each card has a brief reminder of the term/skill in the poke; this is a reminder only, and students may have to refer to their notes for further instruction.
You just need to print off and cut out the cards; then use them in one or all of the following ways:
-Pass them out to students when you want them to practice skills you have taught them. For example, there are five pokes, covering different aspects of essay structure. You can shuffle them and pass them out randomly. Tell students to complete the task and then they can trade with another student. Repeat as often as you need.
-Choose a smaller number of cards and pass out multiple copies of each one. For example, you might focus on the ones that have students work on their introductions, or the ones instruct them to check their topic sentences. Once again, students can trade cards when finished.
-Use to have students focus on the skills they need to most work on. I have included tracking forms so you can check off when a student has mastered a skill. When they are writing, use the form to decide which poke to give them, based on which skills need more practice. You will also find editable pokes in case you'd like to add to the collection.
