Within this project, students will be able to work through and publish the following pieces of writing: Persuasive, Expository, and Narrative. This activity has strong potential to have cross-curricular applications in Math and Social Studies.
Students will choose to research and support struggling entrepreneur from another country. Ultimately, students will try to persuade you and their classmates to give a small loan to the entrepreneur. Your students will review one another's writing and vote on which argument is most compelling. You will then be able to make give a small loan ($25) to the entrepreneur. This project nicely ties previously learned concepts, techniques, and skills into a project with one focus. If you have a local or school organization that helps members of your community, you could easily adapt this project to support that organization.
I've included brief directions for how to launch the project, a word document that you can modify for the students to record notes as they choose their focus for the project, organizers, and rubrics.
My students love this project, and I really enjoy the writing celebration at the end.
