As a Fourth Grade teacher we try to help our students get ready for the Fifth Grade Writing Exam as much as possible. One thing we do is help them to pick apart writing prompts. I use the TAGED method with my class. It stands for Topic, Audience, Genre, Emotions, and Details. I have them write out the information given within the prompt before they even start planning their responses.
Other teachers in my school use a FATP method which stands for Focus, Audience, Topic, and Purpose. I have included a poster set for both of these methods.
Put a set up in your room and work through a few writing prompts together. Your students will be more aware of key words and details given with their writing prompts. Good luck!
