Included are 12 writing prompt/starters for each grade level 3 to 8. There are also data collection editable Excel spreadsheets to monitor progress for your students for each semester. You will also find graphs for individual student progress monitoring.
CWS (correct word sequences) and TWW (total words written) are standardized ways of tracking student growth in writing. Basically, you give students a writing starter statement with one minute to think, and 3 minutes to write. After writing, total words written are counted up, and correct word sequences are scored. For a detailed explanation of how to conduct these types of assessments, which are part of Curriculum Based Measures, please check out the following helpful website: www.interventioncentral.com and click on “CBM”. You can also find norms up to grade 6 on this website. There are norms available through grade 8 in the book The ABCs of CBM: A Practical Guide to Curriculum-based Measurement by Michelle K. Hosp, John L. Hosp, Kenneth W. Howell.
In my classes, I do a set of 3 writing prompts in August to form an average for a student’s beginning score in the CWS and TWW areas. We then set goals for the end of the semester and record them. Students are given graphs to record their scores as we do these writings every month after that. They keep these graphs in their journals that never leave my classroom. We discuss the graph after each writing session, and reset goals as needed.
I keep all of the data for each class on the spreadsheets in this packet. The spreadsheet averages the scores as you enter them, and shows green if a student raises a score, and yellow if a score goes down, so you can easily see how students are doing at a glance. THIS IS A GREAT RECORD TO SHARE WITH PARENTS AND ADMINISTRATION AS WELL.
