Unit Name: Learning from Mentor Authors in Writing Realistic Fiction
Length: 5 weeks- 25 days
Unit Description: The focus of this unit during Reading and Writing Workshop is for students to read and analyze mentor authors such as Leo Lionni, Kevin Henkes, Mo Willems, and Judith Viorst. Students will use close reading to understand these complex texts and formulate the author’s purpose/message. Students will analyze story plots and characters within texts. Students will work to find out what is happening within the story and study the reactions of the characters. In addition, through implementing writing styles from the craft of the mentor authors we encounter, students will work to create a realistic fiction picture book of their own. Students will learn that fiction writers often begin by creating a character that is like them. Writers learn how to access familiar emotions and experiences to give intense realism to their stories.
