One Stop Writer's Shop - the Writer's Tool Box
Preteens and teens are notorious for losing handouts. Either the single page handout was folded, put in a pocket and probably sent through the wash and tossed, or the “packet” did not have a 3 hole punch so got lost floating around inside the back pack. Here is a neat, tidy, and somewhat easy solution!
Most of the concepts are covered in the first two months of school (thus the "2 months" time frame listed under "TEACHING DURATION") and then are refined throughout the year, making this a valuable visual guide, a convenient, durable, and thus necessary resource!
Students make it ONCE and access it all year long.
This one file represents a combination of six other files, over 100 hours of creation and seeing to it that they meet Common Core rigor (and additional California state standards).
This resource is appropriate for advanced 6th grade students (with adult guidance) all the way up to first generation college freshmen. It is especially handy for visually oriented students who could use a concrete memory device to better remember vague concepts like analysis.
Go to https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Kathys-Legacy if you would like to use “Tool Box” for a bulletin board idea.
All other files whose graphic organizer is included here, including the High Five Summary, the Hexagon Response or Response R.A.C.E.S. wheel, the Pineapple Essay Outline, the O.I.C.U Question Mark Analysis, or 5 Stages of the Plot, are also available (through Kathy's Legacy) as individual instructional presentations with full page graphic organizers for students.
Although the files are tagged with 8th grade ELA standards, these are considered part of the "foundational" standards for several upper grades (6-10) and are handy for even higher grades' remedial needs. Priority Standards as per each area addressed are:
Argumentative Form: W.8.1 (RACES), W.8.1.a (Pineapple), W.8.1.b and c (sample writings, increasing in complexity), W.8.1.d (typed sample essays), W.8.1.e sample writings from all three "forms" \ genres (and RACES; Pineapple).
Informative Form: W.8.2 (sample writings), W.8.2.a (High Five Summary, RACES, and Pineapple), W.8.2.b and c (sample writings), W.8.2.d (“other forms”) W.8.e and f (sample writings)
Narrative Form: RL.8. 1 and 8.3 (OICU Analysis), RL. 8.2, (OICU; Plot Line)
14 pages of direct handout resource plus TWO BONUSES: a sample of another foldable product for the instructional value of creating the foldable AND a template to create a similar resource for ANY SUBJECT.
IF YOU ARE THE TEACHER WHO DOES NOT LIKE ASSEMBLING MULTI LAYERED HANDOUTS, SEE THE Ultimate English Guide for Teens -Reading Writing, & Analysis Reference - THE SAME (AND MORE) INFORMATION, BUT IN A SINGLE PAGE HANDOUT (PRINTED TO AN 11X14 IT TAKES ONLY TWO TRIM CUTS AND ONE PIECE OF TAPE TO ASSEMBLE).
