Students use this rubric to evaluate their own writing. It is simple to understand and easy to use and explains basic writing skills in child friendly terms. It builds as the students' skills improve. Start at the beginning of the year by asking children to think about story details, then ask them to think about whether their story has a problem and solution. As the students are ready add these parts to the rubric: Did I use a lot of interesting words? Did I use short and long sentences? Do my sentences start with upper case letters? Do my sentences have periods? Children can highlight the rubric and attach it to the writing piece so they can review it when they write their next entry. Students may also work in partners to help each other evaluate their pieces. For differentiated comprehension activities, math games, word problems and science units that I've co-created, please check out "Primary Partners".
