Are you looking for something to help your beginning writers visualize and conceptualize what they need to have in their personal narratives?
Well, look no further. I use this 'hamburger' rubric with my first graders. It has really helped them to add details and dialogue to their personal narratives. I tell them that the bottom bun is their beginning. The hamburger, lettuce, cheese, onion, pickles, tomatoes, ketchup and mustard are the details and dialogue in their story. Lastly, the top bun is their ending.
On a side note, when I introduce this rubric to my students, I do have to tell them that I'm looking for a hamburger that their dad would like to eat, not the plain burger that they like to eat.
