Directions For Use – Writing Sample Templates

Materials:
> Worksheets for students.
> Pencil or pen for each student.

Activity Directions:
1. Decide which text type or types you want students to write (but do not do more than 1 writing sample in a day) and print the required worksheets. You may wish to print more than one of the lined writing sheets for older students who will write more than 1 page.

2. Explain the task and stimulus to students.

3. Provide students with enough time to plan, write and edit a piece of writing. Do not give students too much assistance as you want to gauge exactly what they know and can do independently (e.g. if they cannot plan and write the 3 parts of a narrative you want to be aware of this so that you can teach structure).

4. Look at the students’ writing samples and use these to map out and plan the teaching and learning that will be needed to enhance students’ writing skills.
